Playing In The Rain
The rains came early for tonight's Wordless Music show at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, falling throughout the Renaissance choral works by Perotin and the first half of Manuel Gottsching's hour-long techno piece E2-E4. No word yet on whether or not they'll be able to perform Rhys Chatham's A Crimson Grail for 200 guitars, but there are a lot of folks here carrying axes who hope they do.
Postscript: Lincoln Center did not permit the performance of A Crimson Grail, saying the amps and other equipment - which were lined up along both sides of the audience - had not had sufficient time to dry out. A huge disappointment for the musicians who had rehearsed all week, and the near-capacity crowd who braved the elements to hear them. Ronen told me afterward that the dress rehearsal (held in the nearby Church of St. Paul the Apostle) was "a total bliss-out," and one of the most astonishing live performances he's ever heard. Damnit.
