As most folks have heard by now, LES stalwart Cake Shop has fallen on some tough times, just the latest victim to the developers and other profiteers who seem to feel that high end barber shops and stores that sell $8 cupcakes provide a greater social need than music venues. Yes, the floors are scuzzy, and the sightlines are for shit. And, that's why you love it. I've had some of the most ecstatic music experiences of my life at Cake Shop, and it would be a damned shame if we let things go the way of Bruar Falls.
Earlier today, Cake Shop proprietor Nick Bodor sent out an appeal for help, which included the good news that they were able to successfully renew their lease for another 10 years. But, they're not out of the woods yet, and are looking for any help they can get to reach their goal of $25,000 in the next five days. More info (including available perks) here.
You can read Nick's letter (including info about tonight's secret show) after the jump. Or just go here to donate.
(From Nick Bodor)
The good news is we finally got a new 10 year lease, so we can stay on Ludlow street as long as we get past a few more hurdles. With the new lease in hand, it makes it much easier to find an investor to take our brand to the next level. I wanted to reach out to all my friends, family and associates to let everyone know of our crowd funding campaign on PledgeMusic.com at:
People can donate as much as they want and get great perks like Guest List for 6 months, drink tickets, coffee cards, admission/open bar to secret shows, etc. We only have 5 days left to reach our goal of $25,000 (today we are at about 65%). Thanks to everyone for their support and it would be great if you could do anything to help us spread the word. By using your social media like Facebook and Twitter to spread the link around, you would be helping us get donations towards the $8,000 needed to reach our goal and collect all the funds.
Please feel free to reach out to me directly or pass this email around if you are interested in helping in other ways (such as a "bridge loan," or if you know anyone who might want to discuss investing now that we have a new lease and have straightened out most of our short term issues).
The love and support for Cake Shop from friends and strangers as a result of this campaign (and the press we received), have made us realize that our hard work and passion for live music has really made a difference to all the people who have came through our doors.
For anyone in town tonight (Thursday) Surfer Blood from Florida is doing a secret show at midnight...I'll be at Cake Shop.
Thank you so much and I hope everyone is doing well. You're the best!
