WFMU to the Rescue
Ok, now we're talking: I just wandered into the half-empty WFMU showcase at Spiro's, and came across Evangelista, an Oakland outfit that blends experimental noise with the overpowering, banshee-like vocals of Carla Bozulich. A cellist played by banging the string with drumsticks; a drummer threw around cymbals and played a singing bowl; a full brass section supplied the rhythmic underbelly. It was wild, chaotic - and the most balls-out performance I've seen so far.
Next up: the legendary Half Japanese. Jeez, Jad Fair's put on a bit of weight...
