String Songs

P6300001 Singer/Songwriter Michi Wiancko's Kono Michi  played Barbes Sunday night, part of the semi-regular Barbes Classical series (now hosted by Bethany). But, outside the array of stringed instruments onstage (including Wiancko's own violin), the six-piece sounded a lot more like trip hop, or maybe one of Billie Holliday's drunken stumbles (esp. while covering "Solitude"). There were erotic descriptions of lost love ("Rain"), a dirge that turned into a lander ("Summer Clothes") and some haunting, hard-to-describe nuggets Wiancko calls "Death Haiku." They even did a Camper Van Beethoven cover ("Opening Theme.") Dark and deeply satisfying.
