Noise and Rapture

080905-205855 WFMU DJs are hosting a series of shows at Issue Project Room this month, with each meant to reflect their own particular (and often eccentric) musical tastes. Dan Bodah, who hosts the Sunday 6-9a slot, selected two local groups, with decidedly different sounds. The Pyramid Scheme Trio, from western Massachussetts (by way of Bklyn), fell somewhere between a screech and a wail, with an occasional Mahleresque oboe thown in. I can appreciate what they're after, but tonight I'd rather not. More box wine, please...

The other band, Bing and Ruth, are familiar to me from nights at Wordless, Barbes, and elsewhere in the nabe. Their soft, minimal sound is always soothing, but tonight is like an ear-drain. Watching David on keys is no less remarkable - nay miraculous - an experience as hearing Kenny Barron at the Vanguard last week. Beckoning us to come close before starting, he and the band took us on a mesmerizing, orchestral journey that left me wide-eyed with wonder. Only 25, David is already where Reich and Adams ended up in their prime; where he'll go from here is anyone's guess. But, it had better include some pretty big stages.  Photo_090508_002
