Call for Bangers

Floating

After Lightning at our feet, I wandered down to the new Galapagos in DUMBO for a late-night triple bill of indie and new music. The cavernous space is beautiful to look at, with the audience sitting in circular islands above a pool of water: a reminder of the entrance to the club's original Williamsburg space. Unfortunately, having all that metal and water in the main space wreaked havoc with the sound, making it heavy with bass and distortion.

That's to take nothing away from the music, which felt fresh and adventurous, without the edginess. Missy Mazzoli's all-female quintet Victrola played mimimalist post-rock bliss. Trio Twi the Humble Feather strummed Gibsons over high pitched nonsense lyrics, sounding like an acoustic version of Queen. Stephen Griesgraber's Redhooker played melodic tunes that were sweet and pretty as a lullaby. Which, at that hour, was exactly what was needed. (More pics below.) DSC08888
