Brooklyn Sounds

Brooklyn Sounds This weekend, BAM's kicked off its 3rd annual Sounds Like Brooklyn festival, featuring a cross-section of the many diverse musicians who call this borough home. I didn't make it into last night's sold-out Beirut show at the Opera House, but it was worth stopping by for the free aftershow upstairs in the Cafe, featuring local indie kids Bear In Heaven. They music was a mix of shimmering textures and experimental sounds, courtesy of distorted guitars and electronics which blended seamlessly with Jon Philpot's psychedelic vocals. Kudos, too, on the trippy, live-channel projections.

Sounds Like Brooklyn starts up again on Thursday, with free shows at clubs from Williamsburg to the South Slope; check out the festival calendar for details.
