In the Moment
There's this thing that happens when a concert begins - when the music is light and gentle and penetrating - when you suddenly find yourself living completely in the moment. Time and cares melt away, and all that's left are you, the performer, and sound moving through space.
Pianist Teresa McCullough provided about fifty of us with that musical oasis last night at Roulette, with a recital of works by American composers. I could only stay for the first half, but that was long enough to catch John Adams' looping, hypnotic China Gates (1977), George Crumb's creepy, Messiaen-like Little Suite for Christmas (1979), and Adams joyous Hallelujah Junction (1998) for two pianos. Thrilling and soothing, all at once. (More pics below.)
