Hammond and Smith

I'd take just about any jazz at a Sunday street fair, but special props to this dude for hauling his vintage Hammond BV to the corner of Smith and Butler in Carroll Gardens. (The guitar and drums are no slouches, either.) Damn, they're gonna blow a hole in the pavement if they keep this up.

I know there are a lot of fans of Blonde Redhead's meandering, atmospheric sound - punctuated by Kazu Makino's eerie, echoing vocals - but after having seen them 1/2 dozen times over the past decade, I've finally decided that they just don't do it for me. Sure, they have arty style, but their sound is flat and doesn't go anywhere. I stayed for three songs tonight at Celebrate Brooklyn, left before the encore, and - despite the avid screams calling them back - didn't feel I missed much of anything. (More pics below.)
