Jazz Women

I managed to make it back to Centro Gallego last night in time to catch Nicole Mitchell's Suono per il Popolo set with her Chicago-based band, Truth or Dare. The music was described in the festival program as "free jazz," but as opposed to John Oswald's free improv, there was a definite structure to this music: a mix of African, gospel and pop, held together by Mitchell's astonishing virtuosity on both flute and piccolo. Playing with her were violinist Renee Baker and drummer Shirazette Tinnin, who together make up the greatest jazz power trio I've ever seen. Not bad when you can see them in a second floor social hall for the price of a song. (More pics below.)
