Retro Fit
Two weeks ago, my Montreal music guide Richard raved about Oakland trio Thee Oh Sees, saying I should catch them first chance I get. Which is what brought me out to Glasslands in Williamsburg last night, where they headlined a packed house of folks revved up for the holiday weekend. Turns out, Thee Oh Sees are just the latest entry in the current retro craze: echoing vocals and trippy guitars that sound like the soundtrack to some 60's beach party. Their engaging sound was strange and orchestral, sending the stageside crowd into a swaying, hypnotic dance. (Far less engaging was local band Golden Triangle, whose two girl singers never should have tried leaving the shower.)
I'm not sure how their set will transfer outdoors, but if you want to find out, you can catch them tomorrow at the Woodsist/Captured Tracks BBQ in Bushwick. Or, if you've got your own BBQ plans tomorrow, they'll be back in two weeks for the ninth annual Siren Festival. (More pics below.)
