Art Punks
I went up to the Whitney last night for their Friday night music series, which continues throughout July in concert with their ongoing Dan Graham retrospective. Graham, a leading figure in conceptual art, has been a longtime fan of punk and lo/no-fi music, having collaborated with bands such as Sonic Youth and Japanther on projects that deliberately blur the line between music and art. The bands on last night's bill fell envelop much the same sound: Grooms played experimental dissonance, while L.A.'s Abe Vigoda couched melodic hooks in thrashing noise. The crowd was relatively small compared with some other Whitney shows, which should give you all the more reason to come to one of their remaining dates. Music starts at 7p and is included with museum admission (which is pay-what-you-will. More pics below.)
