Frankly, I don't know why it took me so long to go see violinist Jenny Scheinman, who's been playing in my Barbes backyard nearly every Tuesday for the past five years. Scheinman has made a name for herself as one of jazz' leading sidemen (sidewomen?), accompanying everyone from Bill Frisell, John Zorn, and Jason Moran (with whom she duetted during last weekend's Winter Jazzfest.)
But, when performing under her own name, Scheinman sticks to the roots and country music she learned growing up on the California coast. Last night, Scheinman sang and picked her way through standards by the Carter Family and Tom Waits - as well as several of her own originals - accompanied by Robbie Gjersoe on acoustic guitar and Adam Levy on a Gibson archtop. With the lights turned low, it was like sitting around a warm campfire, good vibes all around. You can bet it won't be another five years before my next time back. (More pics below).
