Honeyboy
What is it about the blues that keeps these guys playing well beyond the age most folks are laid up in nursing homes? John Lee Hooker was 83 and still playing when he passed away in 2001. B.B. King is 84 and still very much active. But, beating them all is David "Honeyboy" Edwards, who, at 94, still manages to pack in over 100 dates a year. (More about Honeyboy at my earlier post.)
I caught up with Honeyboy at B.B. King's this past Thursday, and while he spent the hour-long set in a chair, switching between a Gibson Les Paul and J-185 Acoustic, he had the energy of someone 30 years his junior. Joining Honeyboy were guitarist Les Copeland and Michael Frank on harmonica, who was replaced for a couple of songs by a kid in his 20's who looked like he was having a helluva time. "Hey, we were all that young when we got started," Frank pointed out, noting that Honeyboy left home for good when he was only 14. Hope you get to play that long, kid. (More pics at the Fan Page.)
