This week, I received a bizarre series of emails from someone called "Nekrotzar," alluding to a certain NY Phil music director having random encounters around NYC with his "friend" Death. The link takes you to a YouTube channel called "Breughelland," where you can also find Gilbert playing Guitar Hero and eating ice cream with the Grim Reaper (who sounds a lot like Jabba the Hut, btw.) Turns out it's all part of the Phil's new marketing campaign to promote Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre, which they'll be performing in a fully staged production May 27-29. Sure, it's dorky and awkward as far as social media campaigns go, but give 'em props for doing something a bit different for a change. Unsolicited advice: next time, don't drop 'em all at once.
