I'm in Toronto this weekend, attending the 16th annual North By Northeast (NXNE) music festival, complete with expert panels, trade floors, and a packed schedule of shows in clubs all around town. At first glance, NXNE is nowhere near the size or scale of its Austin counterpart, but there are some solid panels this afternoon covering everything from 360 deals to music publishing and promotion. The highlight, though, was an interview with The X's John Doe and Exene Cervenka (pictured), who were asked by an audience member if they were still "punk." "We were one of the Founders of punk," Cervenka said. "And, for us, it was never a fad or a lifestyle, it was an ideal, a belief in how we could help change the world. So, yeah, we'll always be punk."
