WBGO's The Checkout Live: Lage Lund
For more than two years, WBGO's Josh Jackson has hosted The Checkout: a weekly show that features what’s new on the New York jazz scene. The companion site is full of on-demand content, including interviews, artist playlists, sessions from the WBGO performance studio, and concert recordings from clubs, concert halls, and festivals.
As WBGO's Special Projects Producer, Josh also hosts several live music events, most notably a monthly series at the Village Vanguard, co-produced by NPR Music. This year, he started a second series of live broadcasts from 92Y Tribeca: the cozy, comfortable new venue just south of the Holland Tunnel entrance on Hudson Street. In addition to the broadcast, the concerts are all streamed live on Livestream, after which they're archived.
Last night's installment, which coincided with a WBGO members event, featured the Norwegian guitarist Lage Lund - the first electric guitarist ever to graduate from Juilliard - and vibes player Warren Wolf. I couldn't stick around for Wolf's set, but Lund had some bad-ass chops, playing with incredible speed and originality, all the while keeping it sweet and low.
After about three hours of sleep, Josh drove to Boston this morning where tonight he's hosting yet another new live series, The Checkout - Live from Berklee. As in: the Berklee School of Music, breeding ground for so many of today's brightest jazz stars. Tonight's broadcast features Berklee alum Christian Scott: tune into 88.3 at 8p or go online to watch the stream.
