Last Call at Southpaw

When I moved to Park Slope in 2002, the neighborhood was more-or-less a wasteland when it came to live music venues (unless you count Karaoke Night at Timboos or the Carriage House.) Then, less than six weeks after I arrived, Southpaw opened up on Fifth Avenue, in a space formerly occupied by a 99 cent store. Their booking policy over the years could be a bit hit-or-miss, but give them credit for bringing a taste of the indie, roots and rock worlds (not to mention comedy) that previously bypassed the Slope in favor of Williamsburg or the Village.

Southpaw is closing its doors for good this weekend, the latest victim to skyrocketing rents and complaining neighbors. Fortunately, you have one last chance to see the old space with the Americana Pie festival, which closes tonight with a headlining slot by 9-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper. Tickets are $25 and available at the door.

If hip-hop is more your thing, tomorrow is the official closing night with with Artifacts, Jean Grae, Keith Murray, Masta Ace and Cypher with Dujeous. Admission free.
