Speaking of LPR, I stopped by last night for an early set of improvisations from three of today's greatest jazz guitarists: Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, and Nels Cline, who heads back to his day job this weekend at a little festival in Tennessee. The three masters (joined by another guitar wizard, Shahzad Ismaily, on drums) all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, interspersing the sweetest harmonic structures with complete sonic mayhem.
Before the show, Frisell—the titular leader of the ensemble—picked up the award for Guitarist of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association (for which Ribot was also nominated.) He accepted it sheepishly, eschewing his standard white suit for a black t-shirt and jeans. Seems like his old buddies are finally rubbing off on him.
