For all the hype about new music in NYC, art song has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle. Composer Paola Prestini and producer Beth Morrison recognized this four years ago and started 21c Liederabend—a biennial festival of contempoary song by some of today's leading leading composers, including Prestini herself, David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, and many more.
The third edition of 21c Liederabend—which literally translates as "Evening of Song"—will be this Friday and Saturday at the BAM Harvey Theater, with video artists and lighting designers backing different programs each night. You can expect to hear music by everyone from Nico Muhly and Anna Clyne to Chinese pipa player Min Xio-Fen, who in the above video sounds just like Buke and Gass. Which is a good thing.
