In a fun coincidence of scheduling last Saturday, it was only a short walk from the the NY Phil's CONTACT! concert at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium to the Temple of Dendur, where the Vijay Iyer Trio was holding court with their unique blend of soaring, symphonic jazz. With longtime bandmates Stephan Crump (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums) Iyer, who was recently named an artist-in-residence at the Met ("Like I need another thing on my plate right now," he quipped, referencing his multiple gigs everywhere from Harvard to Banff) played a mix of old favorites and tracks off his latest release, Break Stuff. With seats spread all around the temple and the sound bouncing off the high glass walls, it was a musical experience approaching the ecstatic. Which, fortunately for us, is just the first of many we can expect from these guys.
